About Mojacar, Almeria - Spain
Mojacar is an ancient Moorish pueblo (village) perched on the foothills of the Sierra Cabrera Mountains, overlooking the Mediterranean coastline of the Costa de Almeria, known as "The Corner of Enchantment".
Mojacar Pueblo is visible from many miles away, with distinctive whitewashed cube shaped houses stacked one upon another separated by twisting cobbled streets, winding steps and old arches, providing a surprise around every corner, with its various restaurants, bars and gifts and craft shops. The village has still retained much of its original character and has a colourful history stretching back before the Moors were evicted from Spain in the 15 th century. To this day the local people re-enact the Moors and Christians battles, in full costume, every June when there are fiestas and festivals held commemorating Mojacar’s ancient past.
Mojacar Playa, a stretch of wide sandy beaches awarded the EEC blue flag for cleanliness, offers the typical features of a holiday resort, for both Spanish and foreign visitors, many of them British and Irish. There are a vast range of restaurants and bars catering for every taste and local activities for those seeking adventure, such as water sports, horse riding, diving, quad bike treks, lawn bowls, tennis and golf. There are vast unspoilt areas for walking and mountain ranges for hill walkers or climbers.
A short drive away are many Spanish villages on the coast, or inland you will discover many villages and towns, often perched on hill tops providing a taste of Real Spain as it has been for generations. The Cabo de Gata national park, around 20 minutes from Mojacar, remains a place of unspoiled natural beauty and breathtaking scenery. The beautiful city of Granada is around 2 hours drive away, where the Sierra Nevada Mountains offer excellent skiing facilities.
There are four local lawn bowls clubs in the Mojacar area, where visitors are always welcome and green fees are extremely reasonable (around 5 Euros per day). There are also four golf courses nearby. Cortijo Grande, a challenging nine hole course surrounded by the Sierra Cabrera mountains, Golf Torre Marina, an 18 hole par 72 course with sea views and Desert Springs Golf par 72, which is the only desert course in Europe. Valle de Este, near Vera (15 minutes from Mojacar) is a new 18-hole course receiving excellent reviews from keen golfers. .
During the summer months the Vera Aqua Park (which is ten minutes drive from Mojacar) provides a great day out for all the family with waterslides, wave machines and full refreshments and dining facilities.
’Mini Hollywood’ theme park near where the ’spaghetti’ Westerns were made is a fantastic days entertainment and set in Europe’s only desert. Vera
